Effects of Social Support and Basic Psychological Needs on Aggression among Middle School Students
Seo Mi-Cheong

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine relations of social support, basic psychological needs and aggression among middle school students and investigate how social support and basic psychological needs have an effect on aggression. A survey was conducted about social support (by parents, teachers, and peers), basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) and aggression (physical aggression, anger, verbal aggression, and antagonism) with 447 middle school students in Choongcheongnam-do and Gyeonggi-do. Correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed by SPSS 18.0. The findings are as follows. First, parental support, teachers¡¯ support and peer support were negatively correlated with aggression. Autonomy, competence and relatedness of basic psychological needs were negatively correlated with aggression. Second, parental support and teacher¡¯s support had a significant influence on aggression although peer support did not. In terms of basic psychological needs, autonomy and relatedness had a significant effect on aggression although competence did not. These findings imply that parental support and teachers¡¯ support among the variables of social support influence aggression and autonomy and relatedness among the variables of basic psychological needs affect aggression.
